Statistically insignificant difference in HPV infection in circumcised and intact men? Check.
Slightly higher HPV clearance rate in circumcised men? Ok, check.
Highly efficacious HPV vaccine available and recommended for girls and boys? Double check (double because there are two vaccines currently available).
Conclusion of Ronald Gray and colleagues of the circumcision lobby: Circumcise neonates and give adults the vaccine.
As we’ve seen, neonates in the United States alone suffer more than a hundred deaths a year from circumcision complications in relatively ideal medical conditions. And as Gray tells us, circumcision does not stop HPV infection like the vaccines do, but rather merely provides a slightly higher clearance rate. Does that mean Gray is advocating a policy with unacceptable and unnecessary risks and essentially no benefit? Check.
